Gma 3100 Drivers For Mac
I've been enjoying my 2.4ghz MacBook (Early 2008) for a month now. Great machine. What an upgrade from a g4 ibook!
I have no complaints about the GMA X3100 gpu so far. I knew that this chip pretty much sucked mop for any fps gaming. However, I've read that Snow Leopard will push the gpus and that the difference between systems with X3100 and Nvidia chips could become more pronounced. I've heard that Intel has recently upgraded the xp drivers for this chip and that they are comparable to dedicated GPUs of the MB. People have installed them in xp via bootcamp and reported good results. Does anyone know if there are any plans to release new drivers for Mac OS X?
I'm hoping that they were waiting for the end of this macbook product cycle before releasing them to prevent undercutting sales of the newer MacBooks and MBPs. I also came across this test which shows that the closeout $900 2.4ghz white macbooks (w/firewire!) hold their own against the new $1600 2.4ghz Unibody Macbooks in almost every aspect except frame rate, which is surprising since the new Macbooks sport a 1ghz FSB and memory. Yes, i know that it's a stretch to call the 3100 legacy hardware - but this isn't User-Logic, it's Apple-Logic. The downside of this is that users with older products don't get the support and attention they'd like. Somebody here will undoubtedly say, 'But they could do BOTH, they could focus on future products BUT STILL focus on those of us who don't upgrade every year!'
They could, but every resource they focus backward detracts from the forward effort. There are two positives in this, however: first, Apple works hard to keep legacy products operational- if not optimized - for a fairly long cycle; second, because Apple is so forward-focused, their products are usually a bit ahead of the game, industry-wise, so it generally takes longer to fall behind the tech-curve. For me, it's a reasonable trade-off. For others, not so much. But unless the Philosophy of Steve is tossed aside, i wouldn't expect it to change anytime soon.
